Take a CBT exam

Updated 4 October 2026

Your teachers set CBT (computer-based) tests and exams that you write on a phone, tablet or computer. Most are taken online in your Schola portal. Some schools run exams offline in the exam hall. Both are covered below.

Find your exam

Open tests show in two places:

  • On your Dashboard, under Tests & practice.
  • In My subjects: click the subject card, then look under Tests & practice in that subject's hub.

Each test shows its duration, number of questions and closing time. A test only appears while it is open. If it hasn't opened yet or has already closed, it won't be listed. Ask your teacher if you were expecting one that isn't there.

Tests marked Exam count. Ones marked Practice are for practising only.

Start and write the exam

  1. Click the test, then click Start (or Resume if you've already begun).
  2. Read the instructions. They show the duration, number of questions and how many attempts you have. Click Begin exam.
  3. Answer each question. Your answers are saved automatically as you go.
  4. When you're done, click Submit exam. Once you submit, you can't change your answers.

The timer keeps running once you begin, even if you close the tab or your phone switches off. If that happens, open the test again and click Resume to pick up where you stopped. When time runs out, the exam submits itself with whatever you've answered.

Strict mode

If the exam start page shows Mode: Strict, the exam watches for cheating:

  • Leaving fullscreen, switching to another tab or app, or opening developer tools gives you a warning.
  • After too many warnings, your exam is submitted automatically.

Before you begin, close other apps and turn off notifications, and stay on the exam until you submit.

After you submit

You'll see Your answers were recorded. If your teacher allows it, your score shows straight away, and the test shows as Completed with your score in your list. Otherwise your teacher will release results later.

If submitting fails, you'll see "Couldn't submit — check your connection." Stay on the page and don't close the tab. It keeps trying until it gets through.

Common problems

  • "You have used all your attempts for this exam." You've already written it the number of times allowed. Ask your teacher if you need a retake.
  • "This exam isn't available right now." It's outside its open and close times, or it isn't assigned to your class.
  • "CBT is not active for your school right now." Speak to your school. This is not something you can fix.

Offline exams in the exam hall

Some schools run exams on a school computer with no internet. In that case:

  1. Connect your phone or laptop to the Wi‑Fi your teacher tells you to use.
  2. Open your browser and type the address your teacher gives you (it looks like http://192.168.1.20:4000), or scan the QR code they show.
  3. Type your student ID (the same one you log in with) to begin.
  4. Pick your exam from the list and write it. Your answers save automatically. If the page refreshes, type your ID again and you'll continue where you stopped.

If you see Nothing to write right now, check your ID is typed correctly, then tell your teacher. They may need to add you or check the exam's time window.
